Workflow (Business Process), Petri net 등에 대한 기본 설명부터 프로세스 분석 기법, Workflow Management System (WfMS)의 기능 및 구조 등이 설명되어 있는 책입니다. 네델란드 아인트호벤 공대의 교수이자 BPM 분야의 대가인 Aalst가 주 저자로서, BPM에 대한 기본 내용을 공부하실 분에게 추천하는 책입니다.

Abstract
This book offers a comprehensive introduction to workflow management, the management of business processes with information technology. By defining, analyzing, and redesigning an organization's resources and operations, workflow management systems ensure that the right information reaches the right person or computer application at the right time. The book provides a basic overview of workflow terminology and organization, as well as detailed coverage of workflow modeling with Petri nets. Because Petri nets make definitions easier to understand for nonexperts, they facilitate communication between designers and users. The book includes a chapter of case studies, review exercises, and a glossary. A special Web site developed by the authors, www.workflowcourse.com, features animation, interactive examples, lecture materials, exercises and solutions, relevant links, and other valuable resources for the classroom.

최근 CIO BIZ+가 실시한 설문조사에서 CIO들은 ‘CIO들이 가장 관심 있는 기술’로 비즈니스프로세스관리(BPM) 기술을 꼽았다. 이는 업무 프로세스 자동화와 개혁이라는 주제가 엔터프라이즈 IT 분야의 핵심 이슈이고, 이를 위한 엔터프라이즈 인프라 기술이 BPM임을 CIO들이 잘 인식하고 있다는 것을 잘 보여준다. 또 최근 델파이그룹이 CIO들과 전문가들을 상대로 BPM에 대한 정의를 설문조사한 결과에서도 BPM 기술에 관한 정의는 여전히 논의의 대상이 되고 있다.

This presentation gives an executive overview of what is Business Process Management and explains why any successful company in the 21st Century organization will use BPM. The presentation is divided into 3 parts: introduction of the process (BPM), process digitalization and the process platform (BPMS) and we end with the example of the Microsoft BPM platform. This video is narrated by Filipe Pinto, M2MSys® Chief Architect. Mr. Pinto is an expert on Business Process Management, Machine-2-Machine communications and Complex Adaptive Systems, which are disciplines he combines in his designs to build cognitive-event-driven information systems.

BPR, PI 등, 그 동안 비즈니스 프로세스에 대한 수많은 연구가 이루어졌으며, 회사에서도 경쟁력을 높이기 위해 비즈니스 프로세스를 정의하고 개선하려는 시도가 많아지고 있습니다. 본 논문은 서비스 산업에 종사하고 있는 25명의 비즈니스 프로세스 관련 담당자를 설문조사 함으로써 연구와 현실에서의 인식 차이를 조사하였습니다. 분석 내용은 1) 비즈니스 프로세스 기본 개념 관점, 2) 모델링과 마이닝 관점, 3) 분석 및 개선 등의 관점으로 분류되었고, 각각 문헌 조사와 설문조사 내용으로 정리되어 있습니다. 본 논문은 이론과 현실의 차이를 분석한 좋은 내용이지만, 서비스 산업의 특성을 감안해야 할 것으로 보입니다. 또한 25명이라는 샘플 숫자가 조금 아쉬움으로 남습니다.

Abstract
Business processes have been discussed for more than a decade now. However, there are not as of yet comprehensive and substantial benefits that can justify the hype around the concept. This paper contrasts and summarises the main findings of literature research and a targeted survey conducted within the service industry in order to investigate the current state of research and practice regarding key aspects of business processes. The survey involved the participation of 25 respondents working in service industry sectors such as finance, public sector and consultancy. The paper demonstrates that although theoretical developments are dealing with sophisticated issues around business processes, the service industry is reluctant to adopt a similar perspective and still uses simple and manual techniques in dealing with business processes. The main reason is that the service industry is not convinced that a business process approach could bring significant tangible and measurable benefits. This is due to the fact that there is no comprehensive and systematic solution proposed in terms of a fully functional business process software suite. The requirements for an integrated business process management tool include some of the paper’s findings. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
