The first question many of you will ask is, “What is Universal Design?” Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without adaptation or specialized design.

If this kind of design appeals to you here are some principles of Universal Design:

  1. Reasonable Use. Make sure that the design is useful to a diverse group of people. For example, sports arena and theaters where the seating is integrated and adaptable to all users.
  2. Flexibility. Make sure the design actually is useful to a wide range of people and their abilities. For example, right and left handed scissors.
  3. Simple and Intuitive Use. Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of knowledge, language skills and experience. For example, an escalator in public spaces.
  4. Perceptible Information. Make sure the design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or user’s sensory abilities. For example, signage and voice commands in all public spaces, such as train stations and airports.
  5. Tolerance for Error. Minimize the hazards and the consequences of accidental and/or unintentional actions. For example, the “undo” button in computer software.
  6. Minimal Physical Effort. The design needs to be used efficiently and comfortably with minimum fatigue. For example, door handles that are levers.
  7. Size and Space for approach and use. The Appropriate size and space is needed for approach, reach, manipulation, and us regardless of body size, posture and nobility. For example, wide hallways in public areas to accommodate everyone.
